March 15th 2000After months of hard work, we still haven’t found any solutions, but we are on our way. We have contacted several scientists, and other ones with the knowledge that we need. It has been a bit surprising how encouraging (almost) everyone has been, and are, even though they might not always have the information we are looking for. It haven’t always been easy, there has been some misunderstandings a long the way, but now it feels like we are on the right track again. Right now we are working with different assignments in the group, some of us are working with the exhaustion from the engines, some are working with the possibility to attach the ferry to the power-net, so it won’t need to keep the engines running, when it is situated in harbour. We are also working with the possibility to install a digestere in the harbour, and with some minor ideas we have to make the ferry safer for the environment. / Ursula Blom
October 28 1999Though we have been taken this ZERI-link class since the beginning of the term this autumn, it is in these last two days that we have really been started to ”get going”, during the term we have learned a lot of the basics of ZERI, and done minor projects, but now, finally, we are up to the great challenge, to help a company with their problems. These last two days, when Anders Karlsson has been visiting us, we have learned even more about ZERI, and now we are eager to get started. Yesterday we decided which companies each group will work with, our group will cooperate with ”Destination Gotland”, a shipping company that operates between Gotland and the Swedish mainland. Today we had our first meeting with the company, they gave us a presentation about their history, talked about their present and future goals, and gave us our task. We will concentrate on the exhaustion, the ”smoke”, from one of their ships, M/S VISBY. We will begin to investigate how much exhaustion there is today, while the ship is in harbour and when it is crossing the Baltic Sea. Then we are going to try to find ways to reduce the pollution. It wont be easy, but we’ll do our best, and we believe that there is a good purpose in what we are trying to achieve. We will try to update this as often as possible, but don’t despair if that doesn’t happen every week, maybe it’s because we’re working so hard with the project that we don’t have time for anything else ;-) / Ursula Blom Our group; Linn Ahlqvist, Maria Klintberg, Mia Nilsson, Maria Pettersson, Gry Dahlman, Hillevi Brinkborg, Kattis Jacobsson, Linnéa Wahl, Helene Nilsson, Nastasha Smolka, Ursula Blom
